Good morning Friendly Fins, you often ask me about scuba gear and today I want to talk to you about scuba masks, thanks to the collaboration with the online store Acquasub that can also provide you with more technical details.
5 tips for having a good mask
How to choose the mask
The mask is certainly the most delicate and important piece of equipment to choose, therefore:
In the meantime, to buy it you need to go to a serious and professional diving equipment shop or to a diving center if you only need to rent it.
try the mask by making it adhere to the face without wearing the strap, creating a vacuum with the nose and looking down, if the mask does not fall then it is the right one for us
In any case, let's get some advice and above all, let's also use a little dose of common sense: a small face needs a small mask!
Once chosen and purchased, we will finally have our mask that can last us a lifetime if we take care of it a little!

"Burn" the mask
The new mask needs to be "treated", because the manufacturers put a film on the lenses to make them brighter and "appealing" but unfortunately this makes them fog up.
Burning the inside of the mask with a lighter eliminates this film and helps to prevent the lenses from fogging up. Be careful though, Friendly Fins! Only professional masks have tempered lenses that can withstand this practice.
Always ask the instructor or the shopkeeper first before setting fire to your mask!
Don't fog up the mask
After burning and cleaning it (because a black film will form on the lenses), the mask is ready to be used, when using it I must:
Do not put any type of sunscreen on me otherwise with the water it will slide into my eyes and burn, also the cream fogs up the mask You have to spit inside the mask, I realize that it is not exactly the most elegant practice in the world but it is the only way to prevent it from fogging up and it must be done when the mask is DRY otherwise it is useless when wet.
Let's avoid using detergents, soaps and anything else that pollute the sea and especially the coral reef, instead let's pass a little toothpaste or dish liquid at home, the evening before using it.
How tight should I tighten the mask?
There is this strange habit of tightening the mask until the eyes pop out of their sockets for fear that water will get in. In reality the mask should be just placed on the face because then it will be the pressure of the water that will keep it well adhered to the face. If I tighten it too hard I risk bending the edges and letting the water in anyway, obtaining exactly the opposite effect, and moreover I risk coming out of the water with a bad headache.
How to store the mask
The mask should always be rinsed with fresh water, especially at the strap attachment and stored in its box (if it was given to us like that) if not, in any case in a place where the edges do not bend and never under the sun.
And now that we can see fantastically underwater, what can we observe?
The first thing that captivates us underwater are undoubtedly the colors!
