LET'S GET TO KNOW IT BETTER
First of all, it can be divided into two internal basins with very different characteristics: the western basin and an eastern basin that differ in salinity and water temperature. The western basin is saltier and colder due to its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar, which ensures a recycling of water from the Atlantic Ocean, although limited, as the strait is 14 km wide and 300 m deep.
The Eastern Basin is also connected to the Red Sea via the Suez Canal, but this may not always be a good thing…
Lately, due to the rising temperatures, some “intruders” (Link alien species) arrive that can harm its inhabitants.
In addition to the division of the basins, we find a different conformation in the 46,000 km of coast:
From the sheer cliffs overlooking the sea of much of the Tyrrhenian Sea, to the long sandy stretches of the Adriatic Sea, to the puzzle of Greek islands, up to the desert of the African coasts.
Every feature is reflected in marine life that has been shaped by millennia of evolution.
Friendly fins can discover this extraordinary life both through snorkeling and diving, but not only…!
By finning on our site you can discover what makes the Mediterranean so special!
SNORKELING
WHAT TO SEE?
What can friendly fins SNORKELS see?
Snorkelers can enjoy the extraordinary experience of coming face to face with one of the most important ecosystems in the world, the protagonist of which is none other than the POSIDONIA OCEANICA.
Declared a UNESCO HERITAGE SITE, Posidonia is essential to guarantee the
life of… Dive in and come and discover it!

DIVING WHAT TO SEE?
What can friendly fins divers see?
Divers have a wide variety of environments to explore, for all abilities and tastes!
The Coralligenous
For all those who think that the Mediterranean does not host corals, well they are very wrong!
The coralligenous or coral biocenosis is a group of organisms that produce calcium bicarbonate, i.e. limestone and allow the settlement of other organisms and therefore a very rich and particular habitat.
One of the most famous builders is red coral, which in addition to being of unique beauty, is also among the most valuable and sought-after corals in the world, why?
The Mediterranean is also rich in caves:
Most of the Tyrrhenian Sea and beyond, is dotted with submerged or semi-submerged caves, more or less large. An environment of extraordinary beauty, you should always address a cave using the formal “Lei”.
…and the Wrecks:
Having been the scene of many battles and wars of the most varied historical periods, but also of accidents, it is very rich in all kinds of boats, ships, planes and submarines. Among the most famous wrecks we can find the oil tanker HAVEN, sunk off the coast of Genoa, it is one of the largest wrecks in the world.
WHALE
WATCHING
What can all the friendly fins see?
There is also a way to experience the beauty of marine nature without even getting wet but comfortably seated on a boat. We are talking about WHALE WATCHING or sighting cetaceans!
The Mediterranean is home to a dozen species of cetaceans! Yes, there are whales in the Mediterranean!
Given their extreme importance for all of us (no one excluded!); France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco have decided to dedicate an area "all" for them, to safeguard them: THE PELAGOS SANCTUARY, the sanctuary of cetaei!
At this point all that remains is to rely on the watchful eye of marine biologists to spot these wonders of nature!
Marine Protected Areas
The vast majority of what we can see today in the Mediterranean is within Marine Protected Areas which, despite their small expansion, present astonishing results, fighting every day against pollution, climate change and indiscriminate fishing.
